Jars Of Clay - Eleventh Hour

Cutting-edge rockers Jars of Clay are known to push the envelope with each new release. Surprisingly, The Eleventh Hour finds them going full circle, largely returning to the formula that made the group's self-titled debut such a smash. But if it's retrenchment, it's at their own initiative: It wasn't enough to produce and write all of The Eleventh Hour; the Jars guys built their own studio to record the project, oversaw the album packaging, directed the photo shoots, and even produced and directed the promotional video. What's with the hyper-control? If they've been feeling a little powerless lately, it certainly doesn't show here: The Eleventh Hour showcases a gutsier, more aggressive sound, especially on such tracks as "Revolution" and "Whatever She Wants." But the edge is tempered with Jars' trademark acoustic beauty; indeed, the ballad "Something Beautiful" more than lives up to its name. Band members say this music was written largely "because of faith, not about it," and faith does seem to be a theme throughout. The title track addresses the power of faith to overcome that ultimate "eleventh hour," death; elsewhere we have songs that doubt God, seek Him and, ultimately, love Him. Lisa Zhito
